After World War I, Sgt. Robert Pennewill, brought back the mask as well as other artifacts upon his return to the United States. In 1919, the mask was donated to the state of Wyoming by entrepreneur, William Coe, after he purchased the collection himself. In 1920, many of the items were stolen from an exhibit at the Capitol.
“Earlier this year, the museum received a tip that a mask being sold online by the Presidential Pawn shop in Rapid City, South Dakota looked like the one taken from Wyoming. The shop donated it to the state.”
Yesterday, The Wyoming State Museum announced its return.
