In Kokomo, Indiana,  pawnshops and other secondhand dealers are now required to hold new items for 10 business days after the transaction has been electronically submitted to the city’s police department. Prior to this new ruling, Kokomo’s ordinance required items to be retained for 24 hours before going on the shelf for sale. Kokomo Common Council member, Kevin Summers, said there is no “real magic number.” The state’s switch to 10 business days will give law enforcement extra time to search their online database for stolen goods and gives individuals who don’t immediately recognize their missing items, time to report the theft.
